About the museum
The museum was created in 1998 for the Upper Austrian state exhibition "Land der Hämmer – Heimat Eisenwurzen" in the old vaults of the economic wing of the former Forsthube Molln, which belonged to the manorial lordship of Steyr; today the Gasthof "Wirt im Dorf" is located there. It was originally set up as a craft museum focused on woodworking and iron processing, showing village life and the working world around the resources of wood, iron and water.
Later the museum took over the collection and the name of the Wilderermuseum St. Pankraz, previously looked after by Roland Girtler. As a result, poaching moved to the center: from conditions under Steyr rule, through the history of poaching from the Middle Ages to the present, to the Mollner Wildererdrama (the Molln poaching tragedy) of 1919, in which four poachers, a gendarme and a forester lost their lives. A collection of rare weapons complements the exhibition.
The craft sections remain as well. They show woodcrafts such as shovel and hoe makers, rake makers and wheelwrights, some with working workbenches, as well as scythe production, the economic foundation of the village. A third focus is the jaw harp (Maultrommel): its production has been documented in Molln since 1647 and is unique in this form in Austria; it is demonstrated in a workshop. The museum is run by the association "Wilderer Museum Molln".
