About the museum

The building on Kirchplatz in Matrei opened in 1866 and initially served as a school and as lodging for the local gendarmes. The municipal administration later moved in, followed by a Raiffeisen branch, and most recently teaching nuns lived here. Its long history as a public building in the town centre made it an obvious location for the national park's visitor centre.

Between 2001 and 2002 the building was remodelled for its present purpose. The architects added a steel-and-glass cube with a lift at the entrance, created openings in the interior and built a glass dome into the roof. The Tyrol National Park administration also works from the same address.

The exhibition “Tauernblicke – Momente des Staunens” (“Tauern Views – Moments of Wonder”) gives an overview of the diversity of the protected area, which includes not only untouched natural landscapes but also the alpine pasture areas shaped by mountain farming culture. In six experience rooms, 360-degree films lead through the habitats of the Hohe Tauern; new film rooms show the view from the perspective of a golden eagle. The tour can be done independently, with a ranger, or with an audio guide.
