About the museum
The Museum Humanum grew out of the collecting passion of the journalist, author and cultural mediator Peter Coreth, who from the 1960s onward gathered artworks and cult objects from all parts of the world. For their display he found the manor farm in Fratres, a border village in the northern Waldviertel directly on the Czech border. The house opened there in 1997.
The concept deliberately broke with the arrangement by world regions and periods that was customary at the time. Instead, the museum places objects from different cultures side by side by theme, motif and ritual context, to make similarities in form and meaning visible. The display is organized into several arcades: it leads from the early pictorial world of hunter and farmer cultures, through images of gods and the transfer of meaning in religious art, to contemporary art.
Besides the collection, the house serves as the framework for the "Kulturbrücke Fratres", within which more than a hundred events, talks and symposia have taken place. Academies and schools use the museum for educational projects. In 2010 it received recognition at the Austrian Federal Museum Prize; in 2011 it reached the finals of the NÖ Innovation Prize.
