About the museum
The Kunsthistorisches Museum was created to display the art collections of the Habsburgs, which had grown over centuries, in a single building. The foundation is formed by, among others, the collections of Archduke Ferdinand II of Tyrol, Emperor Rudolf II and Archduke Leopold Wilhelm.
The Neo-Renaissance building was erected from 1871 to 1891 to plans by Gottfried Semper and Carl von Hasenauer as a counterpart to the Natural History Museum on Maria-Theresien-Platz. Emperor Franz Joseph I opened the museum on 17 October 1891. The staircase and the domed hall are lavishly decorated; among those who worked on the painted decoration of the stairwell were Hans Makart, Mihály Munkácsy and the young Gustav Klimt.
In the main building, the museum today shows the Picture Gallery with the world's largest Bruegel collection as well as works by Titian, Rubens, Dürer and Velázquez, the Kunstkammer Vienna, the Egyptian and Near Eastern Collection, the Collection of Greek and Roman Antiquities and the Coin Cabinet. The KHM Museum Association also includes the Imperial Treasury, the collections in the Neue Burg, the Imperial Carriage Museum, the Weltmuseum Wien, the Theatre Museum and Schloss Ambras Innsbruck.
