About the museum

The idea arose in 1998, when three friendly families from Langenlois – Haimerl, Nidetzky and Steininger – discussed the future of winegrowing. They wanted to make the centuries-old cellar passages of the town and wine culture accessible to everyone, and brought in the New York architect Steven Holl, who combined historic cellars with modern architecture.

The LOISIUM Weinwelt opened in 2003. Above ground, the striking cube of the visitor center stands out; below ground, a path of about 1.5 kilometers leads through a cellar labyrinth up to 900 years old. Multimedia stations tell the story of wine's journey from the vineyard to the cellar, accompanied by an audio guide.

Since September 1, 2025, the site has been leased to the Steininger winegrowing family and is run by their daughters Lisa Steininger-Fonseca and Eva Steininger. With the new name and presentation, new stations were added, such as the staging of the Gärtank (fermentation tank) and a cellar area for large-format bottles. The Weinwelt also includes a wine shop with tastings and the WineLounge Bistro.
