About the museum

The Messerermuseum (Knife Makers' Museum) is dedicated to the history of the knife makers and blade smiths of Steinbach an der Steyr. It was founded by the Verein Messerermuseum and established as a permanent exhibition in 1998 as part of the decentralised Upper Austrian Provincial Exhibition "Land der Hämmer – Heimat Eisenwurzen" (Land of Hammers – Home of the Iron Route).

The building at Hochgasse 17 stands on a site with a long knife-making tradition: next to a low brick grinder's hut stood a grinding workshop that is documented as early as 1477. In 1892/93 it was replaced by a factory building, which gained an extra storey in 1910. In 1956 the knife factory Franz Pils & Söhne acquired the property, and in 1987 the municipality bought it. In 1990 the southern part was demolished for a car park, and the remaining two-storey building is used as the museum.

On around 200 square metres and three floors, the museum shows knife production on the ground floor, the life, customs and associations of the knife makers on the first floor, and on the second floor the historical development, the guild, trade connections and the relationship between guild and church.
