About the museum

The Innerberger Stadel on the Grünmarkt was built from 1590 as a municipal storehouse for food needed for the iron trade around the Styrian Erzberg. The massive double-gabled house with its sgraffito façade, fresco above the stone portal and wrought-iron double eagle bears witness to high-quality craftsmanship; its construction history dragged on for a long time through the Turkish wars, the peasant uprising and the Counter-Reformation.

The town museum itself goes back to a citizens' initiative of 1884. From 1895 the collection was shown in the town hall, and in 1913 it moved to the Innerberger Stadel. For the Upper Austrian State Exhibition 2021, the building was restored and converted into a barrier-free museum in which historic fabric and contemporary architecture interact. The concept was also redesigned.

Using themes, media stations and an audio guide, the permanent exhibition tells of the nobility, middle class and working class in the iron town of Steyr, which in the Middle Ages was for a time the second-largest town in Austria. The collection includes knives from the Petermandl collection and parts of the Steinparz bird collection. Since 2024, the multimedia show "UN#ERHÖRT, dieser Bruckner!" has supplemented the permanent exhibition with the composer's music and relationship stories in Steyr.
