About the museum

The house on Getreidegasse has been documented since 1408; in the 18th century it belonged to the merchant family Hagenauer. Leopold and Anna Maria Mozart rented the apartment on the third floor from 1747. Here on 27 January 1756 Wolfgang Amadé Mozart was born; the family stayed until 1773 and then moved to today's Mozart Residence on Makartplatz.

Already on the composer's 100th birthday in 1856, a first Mozart exhibition took place in the birthhouse. The International Mozarteum Foundation founded in 1880 established a museum here and acquired the entire building in 1917. The collection foundation consists of items of remembrance that Mozart's widow Constanze and his two sons left to the predecessor institution.

Today the museum extends across all floors of the house. The core remains the approximately 130 square meter apartment of the family; added are rooms with portraits, letters and documents as well as instruments on which Mozart himself played, such as his children's violin and concert violin. The birthhouse is among Europe's most visited museums; a comprehensive redesign of the permanent exhibition is planned.
