About the museum
The Domgrabungsmuseum opened in 1974 and displays finds and wall remains from the archaeological excavations around today's cathedral on the original site. It is part of the Salzburg Museum.
Particularly impressive are the remains of a Roman villa built in the late 2nd and early 3rd century over an older house: large parts of the central living area, a courtyard framed by columns, corridors and rooms with channels and a warm-air heating system can be seen. Several mosaic floors with geometric patterns are of high quality, and some lie in two layers on top of each other.
Also accessible are medieval foundations and standing masonry of the west towers of the late Romanesque cathedral, which was built from 1181 and demolished after a fire in 1598; the present early Baroque cathedral was consecrated in 1629.
The museum can only be visited on guided tours. After a final opportunity to visit until 7 October 2026, it will close temporarily for renovation work; as part of the DomQuartier expansion, an extended archaeology museum is to be created on this site.
