About the museum

The Stefan Zweig Centre was founded in 2008 by the University of Salzburg and is based in the Edmundsburg on the Mönchsberg. Abbot Edmund Sinnhuber of St. Peter had the building erected in 1696 on the site of two medieval houses; it later served as a boarding school and educational institution and, from 1961, as a research institute, before the university revived it in 2008 as the "House for Europe".

The centre is dedicated to researching the life and work of Stefan Zweig, who lived in Salzburg from 1919 to 1934. It publishes an edition of his works, a book series and a handbook, and hosts readings, lectures, discussions and conferences on European literary and cultural history.

Open to visitors is an exhibition that traces Zweig's biography in six chapters – Family, Europe, Success, Festival, Farewell and Retrospect – with photographs, books, manuscripts and listening stations, focusing on his Salzburg years. The house also contains the research library of Zweig's biographer Donald A. Prater, which can be used by arrangement.
