About the museum

Nine mills once stood along the Dorfergraben in the center of Zederhaus. After many quiet years, four of them were restored from 2001 onward, and the local heritage association (Heimatverein) set up the exhibition “Mühlen-Leben” (Mill Life) in them. It aims to convey the almost forgotten role of water wheels in everyday life, culture, and technology, which for centuries was the only mechanical drive.

A circular trail of about an hour and a half leads from the village center to five stations, covering topics such as the Gmachlmühle and sayings and songs about mills and millers. Along the Dorfergraben, the Esser Mill shows the path from grain to bread; in the small Bartlmühle, also known as the Märchenmühle (fairy-tale mill), pupils of the Zederhaus primary school exhibit their mill pictures. The two Troadkästen (grain storehouses) tell of growing and harvesting at about 1,200 meters' altitude. Masonry storehouses of this kind, often decorated, exist in Salzburg only in the Lungau. In the Bartlkasten visitors may touch different grain varieties, and in the Walchergut there is an old bread oven where you can try baking bread.

The largest mill along the ditch, the Jakobermühle, has a restored transmission system: instead of a crown gear, it drives the grinding mechanism by the more modern method of milling. The Mühlenweg is looked after by the Heimatverein Zederhaus, which also runs the listed Maurergut farm (Denkmalhof Maurergut).
