About the museum
The Maurergut in Rothenwand is a typical Lungau single-block farmstead with roots in the late Middle Ages. Its owners can be traced back to 1509; later owners included the Gensbichler family (1560 to 1852) as well as the Schlick and Baier families. In 1976 the municipality of Zederhaus decided to buy the farm, and in 1978 the Heimatverein was founded, which restored it together with the municipality.
After five years of acquisition and restoration, the museum opened on 27 May 1984. On the ground floor, the rooms show life on the farm: a parlour with baking oven and stove, a smoke chamber for smoking meat and cheese, a milk room, a farmhands' room and a former dairy. Upstairs are, among others, the farming family's bedroom with a tiled stove, a children's room with winter work in miniature, a mineral room, a gallery of well-known people from Zederhaus and a threshing floor with agricultural and textile-making tools.
The farm also includes a granary (Troadkasten), a mill with a stamping mill that the association restored in 1991, a root cellar and a herb garden. In 2001 the Heimatverein additionally opened the Mühlenweg (mill trail) in the Dorfergraben.
