About the museum

The foundation was a donation of modern prints from the Welz collection. In 1983 the museum opened in the early Baroque Rupertinum, the former seminary in the old town, as the “Moderne Galerie und Graphische Sammlung”. Founding director Otto Breicha primarily built up a collection of Austrian photography, which also includes holdings looked after on behalf of the federal government.

After plans for a Guggenheim museum inside the Mönchsberg were not realised, a new building was erected on the site of the former Café Winkler, opening in 2004 as the Museum der Moderne on the Mönchsberg. Since then the museum has operated two locations. With part of the proceeds from the restitution of a Klimt painting, the former water tower was converted and has served as the Amalie-Redlich-Turm for art education since 2014.

Since 2014 the museum has looked after the collection of the Generali Foundation as a permanent loan. In the following years the Rupertinum and Mönchsberg were renovated and made barrier-free, a new art depot was built and the foyer on the Mönchsberg was modernised. Since 2023 Harald Krejci has directed the museum; since then children and young people under 19 have had free admission at both locations.
