About the museum
The museum goes back to an initiative of the former mayor Werner Gächter and is located on the upper floor of the municipal office in Koblach. It displays originals and replicas of finds that are more than 8,000 years old: pottery shards, bone and stone tools, net sinkers and arrowheads.
Probably the most important piece is a perforated axe that the farmer Xaver Gächter discovered in 1927 at what is now the natural monument "Nellabürgle". The find prompted investigations by the Landesmuseum that lasted, with interruptions, until 1956. The team around Elmar Vonbank found hearths, workplaces and post holes of buildings on the Kadel, a spur of the Kummenberg, and dated them to the Mesolithic around 6000 BC – evidence of the oldest settlement in Vorarlberg.
Other find sites in the municipal area are the Glitz, Rhein and Krinna rock shelters (Balmen). A model of such a Balme, an overhanging rock face, together with a prehistoric lake around the Kummenberg complements the display.
