About the museum
Museum Waldglas Salla was first set up in 1991 in rooms of the village primary school. Since 1997 it has been housed in the former Gewerkenhaus (mine shareholders' house) Salla No. 5, a building from 1811. The year and the initials of works owner Peter Tunner, whose family owned the house, appear above the portal; it once served the hammer, iron-mining and smelting works of Salla. Today the building also contains apartments. The market municipality of Maria Lankowitz is the sponsor.
In three exhibition rooms the museum tells the story of the mountain village of Salla at the foot of the Stubalpe, from the late Middle Ages to the 19th century. At its heart is forest glass: glassworks around Salla have been documented since about 1660, and operations are said to have ended in 1796 due to a shortage of wood. Excavation finds and objects show how glass was made in the forest.
Further topics are the mining and smelting of iron ore, the history of Klingenstein Castle and the influence of the Tunner family on the development of the village. Pupils from a middle school in Köflach played a substantial role in designing and setting up the museum.
