About the museum
The museum is housed in the former late Gothic chapel of Lankowitz Castle. The castle itself dates back to the mid-15th century: Georg Gradner began construction around 1440, and in 1459 the property passed to Emperor Frederick III. The present four-wing building around an arcaded courtyard dates from the 16th and 17th centuries. Later, part of the building served as a branch of a penal institution; the castle is privately owned and is now used as a residence, while the courtyard is used for events.
Since 1998 the castle has housed a local history museum run by the market municipality of Maria Lankowitz. It tells the story of the castle and the village, which has been documented as a pilgrimage site since the early 15th century.
One focus is the lignite (brown coal) mining on the Piberstein, which shaped the village for about 200 years and made Maria Lankowitz one of Austria's largest mining communities; miners' lamps and tools are a reminder of this. Another section displays archaeological finds from the nearby Franziskanerkogel, ranging from the Neolithic and Urnfield periods through Roman times to the medieval Primaresburg.
