About the museum
In Tyrol and southern Bavaria, Notburga is regarded as a popular folk saint and as the patron saint of maidservants and of agriculture. Her pilgrimage church in Eben am Achensee is among the most beautiful Baroque buildings in the country. The church, built from 1736 to 1738, incorporated the tower and choir of a Gothic chapel from 1508; since then the newly clothed skeleton figure of the saint has stood on the high altar.
Because of the heavy pilgrimage traffic, a large parsonage (Widum) was built next to the church from 1739, completed around 1743. With its curved false gable, stucco ceilings and bright connecting rooms, it forms a Baroque ensemble together with the church and the sexton's house. In 2003 the parish decided to set up a museum in the Widum. The objects were inventoried and restored together with the Tiroler Kunstkataster, and the museum opened in 2004; it is run by the parish of St. Notburga and by volunteers.
The exhibition follows the life and afterlife of the saint: from the oldest documents and the legend through popular piety, pilgrimage image and Baroque furnishings to testimonies of lived faith and the history of the bread donation. Another focus is the situation of underprivileged domestic servants. In 2006 the museum received the Tyrolean Museum Prize.
