About the museum
Tratzberg goes back to a border castle against Bavaria that first appears in documents in the 13th century. Emperor Maximilian I used the complex as a hunting lodge until it fell victim to a fire in 1492. The Emperor gave the ruins in exchange to the brothers Tänzl, who had become wealthy through Schwaz silver mining, and from 1500 they built a late Gothic new building with precious marble, wood and iron work.
From 1554, the Augsburg merchant Georg Ilsung rebuilt and expanded the castle in the spirit of the Renaissance. Through inheritance, Tratzberg came to the Fugger family, to whom the painted courtyard and much of the preserved furnishings are owed. After several ownership changes, the castle stood almost abandoned and increasingly decayed.
In 1847 Tratzberg came through marriage to the Counts Enzenberg, who maintained the building over generations. Today the Goëss-Enzenberg family lives in the castle and opens part of the rooms to visitors in the warm season.
Shown include the Habsburg Hall with a painted genealogy of the Habsburgs about 46 meters long, the 2024 newly presented Knights' Hall with armor and weapons, the Queen's Room, the Fugger Chamber, the hunting hall and the castle chapel. Because the castle deliberately has no display cases and is not heated, it is only accessible with a tour and only from spring through fall.
