About the museum

For many years the Salzburg Museum showed Johann Michael Sattler's circular painting of the city, created between 1825 and 1829, as the Panorama Museum in the Neue Residenz on Residenzplatz. When the building closed for renovation, the panorama left its old home in 2023.

Since summer 2026 it has had a new home in the Orangery in the Mirabell Gardens. The building goes back to a design by Johann Fischer von Erlach, was remodelled around 1725 and later extended; in the 1970s only a few exterior walls of the old structure survived, and a two-storey exhibition hall was built in their place, which for a long time housed the Baroque Museum. Following a complete renovation by MHM architects, the Orangery opened on 27 June 2026 as a panorama and World Heritage museum.

At its centre is the Sattler Panorama, which shows Salzburg on an autumn afternoon at 4 p.m. and can now be experienced barrier-free for the first time. Short films, media stations by the Ars Electronica Futurelab, a tactile city model and changing exhibitions also explain why the Old Town has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1996.
