About the museum
Paula Grogger was born in Öblarn in 1892. After training with the Ursulines in Salzburg, she went into teaching and began writing early. With the novel “Das Grimmingtor” (The Grimming Gate) she became known far beyond Austria. Her other works include legends, poems and the festival play “Die Hochzeit” (The Wedding) about Archduke Johann, which was first performed in Öblarn in 1936. In 1952 she received the Peter Rosegger Prize of the State of Styria.
From the proceeds of “Das Grimmingtor” she had her house built in 1932–33, and she lived there until her death on January 1, 1984. Readers and admirers visited the poet at her house even during her lifetime. In 1994 the Groggerhaus opened as a museum.
Today the living rooms can be seen in their original condition. The many objects collected from the author's life also give the house a folk-cultural significance alongside its literary one. The attic, which was later converted, is used for special exhibitions. The museum also addresses the problematic side of her biography and refers to a source-based account by the Festspielgemeinde Öblarn (festival association).
