About the museum
The Winter Sports Museum came about by chance: in 1995 the municipality of Haus im Ennstal was offered a collection of historic winter sports equipment for purchase. The municipal council agreed unanimously, and with that the founding of a museum was decided at the same time. It was officially opened on 8 December 1999.
It is housed in the former granary and tithe barn on Schlossplatz, the old "Troadkasten", whose origins date back to 1490 according to Wikidata. The interior of the building was redesigned for the museum and the municipal library, which share the house. On roughly 300 square metres over two floors, the history of winter sports is told, with a special focus on the Haus region.
On the upper floor, the focus is on the development of skis and ski boots, alongside ice stocks, sledges and ice skates. Haus was long a centre of bobsleigh, which is also covered. A documentation honours the Haus local branch of the Austrian Mountain Rescue Service. In simply designed large dioramas, the show spans the early snowshoes and paw sledges of hunters and woodcutters, rural winter pastimes and the first skiers around 1900, up to winter tourism on the Hauser Kaibling and the school ski courses that have been customary here since 1912.
