About the museum
The museum is housed in the Bruderlade House, built in 1661. The "Bruderlade" (miners' mutual aid fund) was a social institution of the miners: employers and employees paid in so that miners were protected in an emergency. The house served as a hospital, a home for the elderly and nursing home, and provided care for widows and orphans. When mining came to an end toward the late 19th century, the municipality bought the building, which was then used as housing for socially disadvantaged people.
Following a municipal council resolution to give the house a lasting purpose as a city museum, it was thoroughly renovated from 1987 to 1989. The museum opened in July 1989. The historic character was preserved; a Bruderlade room that has hardly changed conveys the living conditions of past centuries.
The exhibitions are devoted to mining in the Schladminger Tauern, which flourished between 1300 and 1500, as well as to crafts, tradition and customs of the region. Since December 2018 the restored Pachauer Krippe (nativity scene) has been part of the permanent exhibition: a former church nativity scene of the town parish church, which was cared for and expanded by the sexton family Pachauer until around 1960, and which shows biblical Christmas stories with hundreds of figures.

Because the building dates from 1661, the museum says it is not accessible: the first floor is partly wheelchair-suitable (small steps and stairs); a narrow wooden staircase leads to the upper floor, and a wider side access with stairs also leads there. Please ask museum staff.
