About the museum

The Retz windmill was built in 1853 by Johannes Tobias Bergmann as a grain mill. For decades it ground grain for the surrounding area until operations were halted in 1924. After that, the landmark of the wine town fell increasingly into disrepair.

Dutch windmill builders restored the site; since its reopening in 2010 it has been turning and grinding again. According to tourism portals, it is one of the very few fully equipped and operational windmills in Austria and is a technical monument.

The mill can only be visited with a guided tour, which explains the technology of the milling mechanism. In the mill cellar there is a mill shop and a wine boutique with organic wines from the Bergmann winery, where the tour ends with a tasting of wine or grape juice. In the adjoining miller's house, visitors bake their own bread at the "Erlebnisbacken" (baking experience).
