About the museum
Between 1935 and 1938 a system of fortifications was built along Czechoslovakia's southern border, consisting of heavy fortifications, that is infantry bunkers, and light fortifications, the so-called řopíky (pillboxes). Some of the structures were still used by the army after the war. Šatov lies in South Moravia, just by the Austrian border south of Znojmo.
The Technical Museum in Brno has operated the MJ-S 3 Zahrada infantry bunker since 2006, where regular guided tours take place. The bunker has been restored to its 1980s appearance and is equipped with the original armament and fittings that the army used there from 1960 to 1999, including two vz. 44/59 fortress cannons.
The site also features a vz. 37 pillbox, anti-tank and anti-infantry obstacles, and an Ippen barrier gate with a border post. Exhibits from 1948 to 1989 document the history of the Iron Curtain: there is a watchtower of the former Border Guard and a replica of a signal wall with electrical border-protection equipment. During special events, members of military history clubs bring the bunker to life.
