About the museum
The Baroque Pöltingerhof on Rathausgasse originally belonged to convents of nuns until the convent was dissolved in 1586. It then served as a residence, passed to the canons of St. Pölten, later to the Religious Fund and Göttweig Abbey, and has been owned by the municipality of Pulkau since 1859. After a fire in 1709 it was rebuilt; the façade is attributed to Jakob Prandtauer. In 1712 the Lower Austrian Estates paid homage to Emperor Charles VI here.
Today Pulkau uses the house as a cultural centre and shows its local history museum in it. One room presents excavation finds, craft tools, documents and coins and tells the history of the town. A memorial is dedicated to the composer and musician Engelbert Heilinger (1876–1961), whose 66 compositions and 28 folk song transcriptions and arrangements are displayed in their originals.
Since September 2026 the Pöltingerhof has also had a new art space, regarded as the start of a cultural quarter in Pulkau; a further museum project on the history of the town and region has been announced for 2027.
