About the museum

The "Veste Rorrow" in the Leitha valley is first mentioned in 1240; its origins, for which stones from Roman times were also used, are unclear. In 1524 the lordship passed to the Harrach family, who built a Renaissance-style water castle here. The Harrach Counts were among the influential families of the Habsburgian Monarchy – as diplomats, church princes and imperial advisors; one of them was Viceroy of Naples. The complex acquired its current late Baroque appearance toward the end of the 18th century.

At the end of World War II, the castle was occupied and devastated, then served as refugee shelter and for agriculture. In 1966, the decision was made to comprehensively renovate the building and bring the family collection from the Vienna Palais Harrach to Rohrau. Spearheaded by Countess Stephanie Harrach, the collection could be displayed to the public here again in 1970.

The painting gallery grown over some 450 years is one of the most important private collections. The Harrach family brought paintings from Naples, Madrid, Rome, Paris and the Netherlands to Austria, including works by Francesco Solimena, Luca Giordano and Anton Raphael Mengs. They are shown together with furniture and decorative arts in the representative rooms. Today Johannes and Ursula Waldburg-Zeil run the castle, which is also the family residence; park, castle tavern and banquet halls complement the visit.
