About the museum
The U3 facility on the Ungerberg near Bruckneudorf was built in 1959/60 as one of the first works of a barrier line with which the Austrian Armed Forces sought, during the Cold War, to halt an advance of mechanised units along the B10 towards Vienna. Between the Leitha and Lake Neusiedl, numerous bunkers and barriers were built for this purpose until 1964; the line was nicknamed the "Schleinzerwall" after the then Minister of Defence Karl Schleinzer.
The bunker was designed for a crew of around 40 soldiers. It had gun turrets from the Centurion tank, a field howitzer, a machine gun dome and an observation dome, as well as its own power supply, central heating, kitchen, sleeping quarters, a medical room and a command post. A concrete shell about two and a half metres thick protected the rooms, and two emergency exits led out to the side facing away from the enemy.
After the end of the Cold War the facility was decommissioned but remained largely in its original condition. In 2014 the Museum of Military History took over the bunker and opened it to the public as an outpost. The telephone exchange, the medical room and the still functional howitzer give a direct picture of defence planning in neutral Austria. The facility is currently closed until further notice because of technical conversion work.
