About the museum
The foundation was laid in the 1960s by subject teacher Heinrich Weiß; in 1974 headmaster Rudolf Treiber began a local collection, for which the people of Jois opened their attics, barns and cellars. In winter 1984/85 the rooms were redesigned and expanded to include a school museum, and on June 23, 1985 the renovated museum opened. In 1986 the association "Ortskundliches Museum Jois" was founded, and the collection was placed under monument protection by the Federal Monuments Office (Bundesdenkmalamt).
After severe woodworm infestation, a general renovation followed from 2005. In 2006 the house reopened under the new mission statement "Museum Jois – Von der Steinzeit zur Weinzeit" (From the Stone Age to the Wine Age). The exhibition rooms are in the basement of the municipal office and in the former bailiff's house behind it, and are organized by themes of time: Stone Age, Village Time, Seasonal Time, Work Time, Leisure Time, Wine Time, Living Time and School Time.
The finds include the "Hinkende Germanin von Jois", a female skeleton. Further rooms show village history since its first mention in 1214, farm tools, historic crafts, a wine press and cellar equipment, a 1930s living room, a classroom from 1938 and a room of the volunteer fire department. Once a month a book exchange corner opens in the school museum.
