About the museum
The Swedish playwright August Strindberg stayed in the Machland region several times between 1893 and 1896: he had married the Austrian journalist Frida Uhl in 1893 and lived here at times with her and their daughter Kerstin, who was born in Dornach. After quarrels he moved to neighbouring Klam. Impressions from this period, such as a hike through the Klam Gorge, found their way into his works.
On the initiative of Friedrich Buchmayr, who also developed the exhibition concept, the Strindberg Museum was established in 1997 together with the municipality of Saxen – the only museum dedicated to the author outside Sweden. The show "Abgründe einer Seele" (Abysses of a Soul) presented original letters and manuscripts, contemporary photographs and a piano bought by Strindberg; a multimedia installation let visitors relive a novel passage about the gorge hike. In 1998 the museum received the Strindberg Prize of the Strindberg Museum in Stockholm, and in 2007 the "Museum of the Month" award from the Upper Austrian Museums Association. Since 2009 a cultural hiking trail has linked Saxen with Klam.
After around 30 years in premises in Saxen, these have no longer been available since spring 2026. The cultural association, under new leadership, is preparing the move to a barn near the Schneider-Häusel close to the Strindberg-Stöckl in Klam; there the exhibition is to be digitally revised and redesigned for all age groups.
