About the museum
The Stille Nacht Museum Wagrain commemorates the priest and poet Joseph Mohr (1792–1848). He wrote the text of the world-famous Christmas carol "Stille Nacht! Heilige Nacht!", which was first sung in Oberndorf in 1818, and from 1837 until his death he served as curate in Wagrain. There he looked after pastoral care, the school, and the support of the poor and the elderly; his grave lies by the parish church.
The museum is housed in the Pflegerschlössl, built in 1794 for the highest archiepiscopal administrator. The building later served as an administration and court building, a school, a bell foundry, a smithy and a residence. It was restored and made barrier-free; an annex designed by Ulrich Stöckl houses the ticket desk and an event room. In front of it stands a pergola with the lyrics of the song. The museum is run by the cultural association "Blaues Fenster" and lies near the Waggerlhaus.
In the basement, an interactive light wall presents the local history of Wagrain, from a poor mountain village to a tourism center. The ground floor is devoted to the creation of the song, with originals, text-and-image installations and sound recordings. The upper floor is about security, pausing and the perception of time; it also has listening stations with arrangements of the song and an interactive globe showing how it spread around the world.
