About the museum
The house on Regensburger Straße is the birthplace of painter, graphic artist and playwright Oskar Kokoschka. After the Second World War, Pöchlarn honored its famous son: Kokoschka first visited the town again in 1956 since his childhood, and in 1966 the first exhibition of his works took place in Pöchlarn Castle.
Under the patronage of Oskar and Olda Kokoschka, an association for researching and documenting his work was founded in 1973; in July of that year, the Oskar Kokoschka Documentation opened in the rear wing of the birthplace. Since 1995, the association has worked together with the University of Applied Arts Vienna.
The town municipality acquired the birthplace in 1998 and converted it into a cultural and exhibition center with gallery rooms, a library, a lecture hall and workshop rooms, which opened on September 27, 2002. The holdings consist mainly of printed graphic works, some of them from a donation by Kokoschka, along with photographs, archival materials, correspondence and mementos.
A permanent exhibition traces the artist's phases of work and stations of his life; in addition, a summer exhibition with a changing focus takes place every year.
