About the museum
The Welserturm was built in 1484 as a defensive tower. In its roughly 500-year history it served as the residence of the steward (Pfleger), as a storehouse and prison, as a gas holder for acetylene lighting, and in the final days of the Second World War even as a command post. In the great town fire of May 6, 1664, it lost its conical roof.
After renovation in 1997, the Stadtmuseum Arelape-Bechelaren-Pöchlarn moved into the tower; in 1999 it received a modern roof designed by the architect Helmut Haiden. The museum is run by an association whose members are volunteers.
The permanent exhibition "Arelape – das römische Pöchlarn" was created together with the Bundesdenkmalamt (Federal Monuments Office) and spans two levels. All objects come from Arelape, the former fort on the Danube limes: armor pieces, vessels, coins and rings, inscriptions and statues, along with digital reconstructions of the fort. New finds from the inner-city project are continuously added; among the showpieces is an oil lamp in the shape of a woman's foot with a sandal.
