About the museum

The museum's roots go back to 1910, when the teacher Heinrich Mose showed around 200 objects from folk culture and guild life at a trade fair. Because of its success, in 1911 the town, under Mayor Dr. Emil Stockhammer, decided to found a "local" museum, which opened in 1913 in the post office wing of the town hall. After interruptions during the First World War, it reopened in 1931 as the "Städtisches Museum Neunkirchen".

In 1940 the collection moved to Stockhammer's former residence, which the town had purchased and which still houses the museum today. After the conversion in 1961 it was known for a long time as the "Heimatmuseum"; since 2005 the building has been modernised in stages, and since 2011 it has again borne the name "Städtisches Museum". The conversion of the main building was completed in 2015.

A small part of more than 12,000 objects is displayed across 15 exhibition rooms. The collections comprise natural history, archaeology, town and district history, numismatics and folk culture. Among the highlights is the crouched burial of a man of about 5,300 years ago from the Copper Age, the "Neunkirchen Ötzi". The annual Roman Festival and experimental archaeology trials take place in the museum garden.
