About the museum

The present museum building was erected in 1926 by the Naturfreunde Wiener Neustadt as a holiday camp and was called the "Wiener Neustädter Haus". In 1987 the municipality of Hohe Wand bought the house and, with painstaking attention to detail, set up an alpine and local history museum in it. The historic stone building now stands in the Hohe Wand Nature Park; the Naturpark Stüberl is located in the same house.

The exhibition leads through the history and nature of the region: one section is devoted to mountaineering, including the "priest in mountaineer's clothing". Another deals with cave exploration, since more than 180 caves are known in the Hohe Wand area. In addition there is mining as an important source of income over the last hundred years, as well as Roman settlement with a Roman stone grave and grave goods. A "treasure chamber" displays the natural treasures of the Hohe Wand.

Groups can be guided after prior registration. A museum visit is included in the Nature Park ticket.
