About the museum
The Biedermeier painter Friedrich Gauermann was born in Scheuchenstein in 1807 and died in his studio in 1862; his grave is in the cemetery by the village church. As an animal and landscape painter he is among the leading artists of the Biedermeier period, shaped by country life in summer and extensive study trips to the Alps.
The Gauermann Museum in his home village reopened on May 19, 2002. Since then it has been run by the Kunst- und Kulturverein Gauermann, founded in 1997. The long-term loans in the exhibition come largely from the Lower Austrian State Museum and from private lenders; it was curated by Wolfgang Krug.
On the ground floor, the permanent exhibition shows the painter's work in chronological order. On the upper floor, exhibitions of contemporary art, concerts, readings and courses take place regularly. From the museum, the approximately 4-kilometre Gauermann circular hiking trail, with a herb demonstration garden and Malerwinkel (painter's nook), leads to the church and the painter's birthplace.
