About the museum

In the Middle Ages, Perg owed a good part of its prosperity to the quarrying of sandstone millstones; stones from the Perg area were sold far beyond the region. The guild of millstone cutters is documented since the late Middle Ages and existed until the 19th century.

The Steinbrecherhaus itself was built in 1802 as a modest workers' dwelling; in the 19th century a family of nine lived here in very cramped conditions. The Verein Steinbrecherhaus acquired the building in 2007, renovated it while preserving its original character and set up the millstone museum inside. For preserving this rare example of rural building culture, the association received the Upper Austrian Folk Culture Prize in 2008, and in 2009 the ensemble was placed under heritage protection.

Inside the house, authentically furnished rooms with a tiled stove and smoke kitchen show how the quarrymen's families lived, and an exhibition is devoted to tools, stone objects and the history of the trade. In the outdoor grounds there are a reconstructed work hut, a small garden house and a hydraulic ram by a stream. In 2019 the Meisingermühle was added, a mill originally from Carinthia, at which the development of milling up to the 1960s can be traced. The house is also a stop on the Donausteig and a venue for events and educational activities.
