About the museum
In 1984 the municipality of Windhaag bei Perg acquired the old school in Altenburg, which stands next to the branch church built around 1300. Since 2002 a museum has been set up there, run by a local cultural association, showing the past of the area.
The focus is on Joachim Enzmilner, Count of Windhag: a man of humble origins who rose to wealth and a noble title in the 17th century, had a castle built and was among the Counter-Reformers of the region. His daughter Eva Magdalena later had the castle demolished in order to build a convent in its place. Alongside the count's life story and the history of the Prager family, finds recovered from Windhaag Castle can be seen.
A visit often also includes a look at the neighbouring church with the crypt of the Prager family and its roughly 500-year-old frescoes. The Enzmilner cultural trail connects the museum with further sites in the surrounding area.
