About the museum
The idea for a Styrian fire brigade museum arose in 1986 during the fire brigade pilgrimage to Groß St. Florian; in 1988 the supporting association was founded. In May 1995 the museum opened in the former Markushof, one of the oldest buildings in the village, dating from the 16th century, which formerly served as an ecclesiastical administration building. The architect Manfred Wolff-Plottegg redesigned the dilapidated house without greatly altering the old fabric of the building; the entrance of the fire-red house, with a rotating ladder, is striking.
A gallery was added in 1997, and since then the museum has combined firefighting and art: alongside the permanent collection on the Styrian fire brigade there are major retrospectives of Styrian modernism, contemporary art and cultural-history themed exhibitions. The permanent collection on the first floor was reopened in 2015.
It asks about the people behind the call-outs and their motivations and, alongside historic fire-fighting equipment and modern operational technology, above all shows an extensive collection of national and international firefighters' helmets. The museum also keeps finds from the Roman villa of Grünau, including a silver cup with chariot-race reliefs.
