About the museum
The Weinmuseum is located in a Hauerhaus (winegrower's house) on the Steinriegel in Kitzeck im Sausal, which bears the date 1726, was extended around 1910 and is listed as a historic monument. The winegrower's house was fitted out for use as a museum and opened in 1979 as Styria's first wine museum. It is looked after by the municipality of Kitzeck im Sausal.
Kitzeck is considered the highest-situated wine village in Europe, and the museum collects and preserves what the people of the region have created for viticulture and cellar management over roughly a thousand years. The house's motto is "Den Ahnen zur Ehr', der Jugend zur Lehr'" (roughly: honor to the ancestors, instruction to the young).
In the style of an old farmhouse, the exhibition shows rural household goods and the development of cellar management through display boards and the appropriate tools. During guided tours visitors encounter over a thousand artifacts and many stories about Styrian viticulture and its winegrowers; from the museum there is also a wide view over the South Styrian hill landscape.
