About the museum
The Tabakmuseum Oberzeiring opened in 1986 as a private museum founded by Rudolf Kellner. Its core collection came from the Tabakmuseum of Austria Tabak, the former Austrian state tobacco monopoly company. The house stands on Hauptstraße in Oberzeiring, in the market municipality of Pölstal in the Murtal district.
Across roughly 400 square meters in five rooms, the collection now shows about 2,000 objects. It illustrates the path of tobacco from plant to cigarette and the development from craftsmanship to the industrial tobacco factory. On display are cigarettes, cigars, and pipe, chewing and snuff tobaccos from 45 countries, along with accessories such as a snuff device, cigarette paper, stuffing and Wuzel machines, ashtrays and artfully designed pipes.
Cigarette pack designs document the change in packaging design, old tobacco cutting machines and dioramas of the children's and recreation homes of Austria Tabakwerke complete the tour. In the video room, a gallery recalls the directors general of Austria Tabakwerke from 1784 to the present day; the exhibition also includes panels on the tobacco monopoly and on the workforce of the Austrian tobacco administration.
