About the museum
The visual artist Aramis founded the museum in 1996 in Schloss Lind near Neumarkt in Styria as a total work of art. Since his death in 2010, it has been continued since 2011 by Britta Sievers and the author and theatre maker Andreas Staudinger as a centre for region-specific art and culture of remembrance. It sees itself as a hybrid of total work of art, museum and memorial site.
The castle consists of two parts: the Gothic Oberhaus, a multi-storey residential tower from the 15th century, and the late Renaissance Unterhaus. A fortified residence probably already existed here in the 12th century; later Lind belonged to St. Lambrecht Abbey. During the Second World War the castle served as a subcamp of the Mauthausen concentration camp, which is commemorated by a memorial. The surrounding area is also archaeologically significant: finds from Roman times and burial mounds from the Hallstatt period are documented.
On around 3,000 square metres, the house combines the permanent exhibition "das eigene & das fremde" ("the familiar & the foreign"), the memorial, rooms with installations by the founder, several galleries, a concert and performance hall and four libraries. In the freely accessible castle park there are 14 park galleries. Among other awards, the museum received the Kulturlandschaftspreis in 1998 and the Volkskulturpreis of the Province of Styria in 2003 and 2020.
