About the museum

Since 1992 the museum in Gaschurn has been housed in a historic Montafon house, a wooden building from the early 19th century that stands out for its simple beauty. This was the home of the Gaschurn early-mass priest Franz Josef Battlogg (1836–1900), who gained international renown in the late 1860s and 1870s as a priest, church musician and Alpine pioneer.

Battlogg called Gaschurn the "vestibule to the great mountain world" and published numerous accounts of his mountain tours, becoming a pioneer of Alpine tourism in the valley. Against the mountain backdrop of the Silvretta and Verwall, the Alpine and tourism history of the Montafon is therefore the focus of the permanent and temporary exhibitions.

The house is one of the Montafon Museums of the municipal association Stand Montafon and is run and promoted together with the museums in Schruns, Silbertal and Bartholomäberg.
