About the museum
The museum was created in the former building of the post office and Raiffeisen bank in the centre of St. Antönien. When the association Kultur Gruppe St. Antönien was founded, it opened the local museum "Poschtchäller" there at the same time. Its permanent exhibitions were devoted to the pottery of the Lötscher family, the Ice Age cave bears from the Sulzfluh area, former agriculture and the village church; there were also exhibitions that changed throughout the year.
In autumn 2022 the building was completely rebuilt and refitted as the "Laubänähus" – House of Avalanches. Since then the focus has been on the avalanche history of the high valley, which for centuries was repeatedly hit by severe avalanches and whose life has been shaped by them.
In a small cinema, old film documents and new recordings play in which survivors tell their memories, including the disaster of 20 January 1951. In a reconstructed Walser parlour, visitors can relive the oppressive feeling of an avalanche night. A timeline shows the planning and construction of avalanche protection on the Chüenihorn and the Eggberg, partly using original concrete and steel elements. An experience room makes avalanches tangible with image, sound and – with 3D glasses – even cold.
