About the museum
The museum goes back to the Grödiger Heimatmuseum association, founded in 1989; in 1990 the rooms could be opened to visitors. The collection is housed in a converted residential house where a lime burner once lived. Today the municipality of Grödig and the association run the house together. Across about 230 square meters, of which around 194 square meters are exhibition space, the museum presents the Untersberg, the local mountain of the city of Salzburg, from several angles.
The focus is on Untersberg marble, which has been quarried at Fürstenbrunn for centuries and was used for example in the Salzburg Cathedral, and on water: a large part of Salzburg's drinking water comes from the mountain, and so does the Almkanal, whose roughly 900-year history the museum traces. A true-to-scale wooden layer model at 1:3333 shows the entire massif. The museum also includes the ball mill, in which marble balls have again been ground with water power since 1989 – formerly children's toys, ballast for ships or cannonballs.
The museum also covers legends and customs: masks and costumes of the Wild Hunt, which runs riot on the second Thursday of Advent, as well as the bogs of the surrounding area. Another theme area commemorates the prisoner-of-war camp that existed in Grödig from 1914 to 1918.
