About the museum

At the end of the 1990s the growing collection of historic aircraft of what would become the Flying Bulls was still housed at Innsbruck Airport. When space ran out, the idea arose of a hangar of its own at Salzburg Airport that would also serve as an exhibition venue. Red Bull Hangar-7, a vision of Red Bull founder Dietrich Mateschitz, opened in 2003.

The self-supporting structure made of around 1,200 tonnes of steel and 380 tonnes of curved glass resembles an aircraft wing from the outside and spans the fleet inside like a vault of the heavens. The building is just under 100 metres long, 67 metres wide and up to 14.5 metres high. The largest exhibit is a Douglas DC-6B; the collection also includes rarities such as a Lockheed P-38 Lightning, a North American B-25J Mitchell, a Chance Vought F4U-4 Corsair and several helicopters. Because the aircraft are airworthy and used at air shows, the display in the hangar changes; the fleet is maintained in the neighbouring Hangar-8.

Besides aircraft, the hangar shows Formula 1 cars and other exhibits from the world of Red Bull as well as changing art exhibitions. It is also known for the Ikarus restaurant, where a different international top chef cooks every month. At the beginning of 2025 the building was closed completely for the first time and modernised with new air conditioning, digital exhibit labels and a revised spatial concept; since 7 June 2025 it has been freely accessible daily again.
