About the museum
The Amandinahuis in Schakkebroek, a sub-municipality of Herk-de-Stad, is the birthplace of Saint Amandina. She was born in 1872 as Maria-Pauline Jeuris, became a missionary sister and left for China. During the Boxer Rebellion she was killed in 1900, together with other Christians, at the age of 27. In 1946 she was beatified, and in 2000 the pope declared her a saint. She is the only saint from the Limburg region of modern times.
The birthplace is a nineteenth-century half-timbered farmhouse that was protected in 2002, but for a long time was in poor condition. The city of Herk-de-Stad had the farmhouse fully restored at a cost of about €2.7 million. The former pigsty became a multi-purpose hall, the former barn is to be used as a catering space, and a modern kitchen is being added.
A permanent exhibition about the life of Sister Amandina in Schakkebroek and China is being set up in the farmhouse. An opening date for the museum has not yet been announced.
