About the museum
The Historisch Centrum Luchtmachtbasis Brustem preserves the history of the Brustem airfield near Sint-Truiden, from May 1940 until the base closed in 1996. The centre is housed in the cellar of the abbot's wing of the Sint-Truiden abbey site.
The exhibition follows the various periods of the airfield: the interwar years and the days around 10 May 1940, the German occupation from 1940 to 1944, the American period from 1944 to 1945, and from 1947 the Belgian air force, which trained its pilots there. The Red Devils, the aerobatic team of the Belgian air force, also receive attention, as does the period after the closure in 1996. With photos and unique objects linked to the base, from the construction of the airfield in 1936 onwards, you get a picture of life on and around the base.
Expert guides lead visitors through the centre. A number of books on themes from the base's history were published in-house and are on sale during a visit.
