About the museum
Museum de Velodroom in Snellegem (Jabbeke) shows a private collection centred on the bicycle. It contains some ninety bicycles, an extensive collection of lanterns, tax plates, headset plates and advertising signs, and all kinds of curiosities. A few dolls bring the display to life. All the vehicles can be ridden and can be demonstrated in folkloric parades and at craft markets.
The collection follows the development of the bicycle: from Michaux’s ‘boneshaker’ of 1868, via the high-wheeler with its large front wheel, to the safety bicycle with chain drive and the Dunlop pneumatic tyre of 1888.
On the attic floor there is a corner with everyday objects from vanished trades, a bicycle repairer’s workshop and a living room around 1900. The museum can only be visited by telephone appointment.
