About the museum
Extra City was founded in 2004 by Wim Peeters and was first based in a grain silo in the Antwerp port. In 2006 it moved to an industrial space in Antwerp-Noord and grew into a true art centre with thematic and solo exhibitions by international artists. In 2013 it moved into the former Wasserij Goossens, which also housed studios, a bar and a small cinema.
Since 2020, Kunsthal Extra City has been located in the former Dominican monastery on the Provinciestraat. The monastery church was completed in 1925 to a design by the architect Frans Mertens and combines late neo-Gothic features with a great deal of light. After severe war damage in 1944, the church was rebuilt, with stained-glass windows by Abram Stokhof de Jong. The design firm Rotor made practical adaptations to the building for exhibitions, without changing the religious architecture much.
The art centre shows contemporary visual art with social relevance and works with artists, cultural players, social organisations and local residents. There is no permanent collection: the programme consists of temporary exhibitions and activities. Since 2025, Antony Hudek has been artistic coordinator.
