About the museum
Fort de Lantin is one of the twelve forts that protected Liège. Designed by General Brialmont, it was built from 1886 on the initiative of the Belgian government and King Leopold II, and inaugurated in 1888. Almost entirely in unreinforced concrete, triangular in plan and surrounded by a moat, it is one of the smallest works of the Liège fortified position.
In August 1914 it endured several days of bombardment by 210 mm howitzers; only one cupola was then still able to fire. Its commander capitulated on 15 August, shortly before the explosion of Loncin fort. The fort was not modernised after the war: it served as a depot, then as a drill ground and shooting range, before being abandoned by the army.
The association “Les Amis du Fort de Lantin” took over the site in 1983 and restored it. Today an audio-guided route lets visitors discover this almost intact example of 19th-century military architecture. The fort also houses a telephony museum and the Beaurevoir museum, dedicated to the art of cooking. It can be hired for events and offers unusual overnight stays in former soldiers' barrack rooms.
